Polish soccer

When Poland were 1-0 up in the opening match of Euro 2012 a short while ago, all the BBCTV pundits were saying they can't fail to go on and win. But a Polish mate of mine said "No way we'll win...we never do". He went on to explain that, being such a poor nation, it's more lucrative for the players to accept backhanders to throw matches than go on to victory. Highly contentious, of course, but I can clarify this was just his opinion. Anyway I'm not convinced especially as they were playing Greece, a country with even less money than Poland. And if it's a common belief in Poland, why do all their fans bother turning out for the big tournaments? Mind you, the English fans do and we alway lose without needing any financial motivation to do so. Any Poles out there in AB?

The match ended 1-1, I should add, with the BBC experts at a loss to explain Poland's capitulation
The substitute Polish goalie didn't look like he was accepting backhanders to throw matches.
Pundits always write the future and then are amazed when the future as always writes itself. Anyway I think your friend's assessment is ludicrous
