So true, bazwillrun - our government seem powerless when it comes to protecting people from extradition to the US. And given what we know about how prisoners have been treated in Guantanamo Bay - tortured, no legal advice, no charges - it seems really scary that our government if happy to just ship people off there. No matter how innocent you are, it must be terrifying!

You cannot really compare the two.

Assenge case was a legal arguement. Whether the Swedish prosecutor who made the extradition request was a competent “judicial authority” under the terms of the European Extradition Treaty. It was always likely that the UK Courts would find they were. After that, there is not much more room for manoeuvre. The Qatada case is totally different.
