It looks fine on the map but once a large vessel starts to swing it can be exiting.
That's when tug skipper earn their pay
Many thanks for the link em10. x very interesting!!!
deggers, the locks in Hull and on the Panama Canal are still water. It's an entirely different matter driving something in water that's moving as fast as the Thames can.
pusskin, hope you get to see it. Might have a peek too..
/// HMS Ocean is a helicopter carrier. ///

Are not helicopters also 'AIR' Craft?
That is one heck of a tight fit, given the tide and currents
pedantic till the end AOG!!!!!

It was the first poster who was being pedantic, I was merely asking a relevant question.
it's a tight squeeze, you can see that from the photo's .
Pusskin - HMS Ocean is berthed at Greenwich until 'next week' (no date) according to The Times but back in July for the duration of the Olympics. It will be used for helicopters used in the securiy operation and home to 500 Royal Marines.
pusskin if you are about, it's quite a ship, you can't get too close obviously, only if you take one of the tourist boats either up to Greenwich or back. which give a birds eye view.

It would have taken some doing getting that ship through the Thames Barrier. Very interesting i must say...
How far up river is HMS Belfast moored?
near to Tower Bridge, so not sure how to determine how far up..
sandyroe, just had a thought, the one currently berthed at Greenwich is HMS Ocean.

whilst HMS Belfast is permanently moored near Tower Bridge.
sandyRoe, you can enter HMS Belfast on Google Maps and it will show you.
incidentally, Belfast will be firing gun salutes at 1620 and 1920 on Wednesday, should you wish to offer yourself as a target

The ship is closed until the 18th, however. (After an embarrassing contretemps with a collapsing gangway last year.)
jno, are you suggesting sandy set himself up as a target, or was that me, couldn't tell. I wouldn't like to be in the vicinity if she does fire off the guns
the noise will be deafening.
