Government failing on deportations

Since the Government came to power there has been a huge decrease in the number of people deported compared to the previous Labour Government.

I must admit this surprised me. I had expected the figures to be higher. Why are the Government letting more people stay?

The 39,000 refers to all deportations, and this question refers to criminals deported. Unless we are sending less foreign criminals to prison, which seems unlikely, we must be letting them stay here after their sentences.

Do not wish to upset anybody but "unfit for purpose" comes to mind.

It costs money to deport someone. Unfortunately this is one of the areas that have cut backs.
