There have been several examples of groups with shared names. I cam immediately think of Blue (1970s) and Blue (more recently), Kenny and Kenny in early 70s, Mr Big (70s) and Mr Big (80s/90s), Oasis (US) and Oasis (Gallaghers). I'm not sure what happened in those cases.
I remember Smokey having to change to Smokie (or was it the other way round)
