errrr, they belong to britain don't they? After all, that was what we had a war over 25 years ago
The Falklands belong to Britian, that is why we sent our troops over there, the Argentinians had decided to take over the island. Hence the war.
The wishes of the inhabitants are that they belong to Britain.
They belong to Britain but Argentina believe they are rightfully theirs.
The French were the first to colonise them. Then the Spanish, then the Argentinians. Then the British so it`s anyone`s guess who they belong to. Geographically, I would say they should belong to Argentina but the people consider themselves British so I would say Britain - for now..
They are British.

In the 22nd century all computers will run on Guano and our investment in the Falklands will be realised.
It'll be British till the oil and minerals run out then it'll be anyone's.
Imagine the Scilly Isles belonged to Argentina - how would jingoistic Britain feel about that...?
Well, if the Scilly Isles had been discovered by an Argentinian - there is dispute as to whether they were first found by Britain, Spain or Portugal - and their population was virtually entirely of Argentinian extraction, I might believe they were entitled to them!
Pssst. It's 30 years ago this year.
The British Government were on the verge of relinquishing the Falklands,in the early 1980s,I believe.Until Thatcher saw it as an opportunity to bolster her flagging popularity. What better vote winner than a "War Hero"?
The dispute I mentioned referred to the Falklands, not the Scillies!
Until the population of the Scilly Isles decide they want to be governed by Argentina I'm guessing they'll remain part of the UK.

Nothing to do with jingoism, it's the will of the people in a democratic society.
They're British, that's why we have troops and the Navy down there.
Let me reiterate something here...
The Only Thing That Ties The Falkland Islands To Argentina Is Geography!!!!

The islands were under British rule before Argentina was even a country. The only time Argentina has had control of the islands was for the short period of time they invaded.

They are not called The Malvinas despite what people believe.
Argentina has as much right over The Falklands as the UK has over Greenland.
We won't be capable of defending them next time.

We only just avoided an embarressing failure last time.
It's down to the people who live there. If they wanted to be Argentinian, they could be.

What it's really about is the territorial waters. There's rich fishing, and every chance that there will be oil - I think there was an exploration under way.
We can always depend on the French for our shared aircraft carrier .......................... can't we?
Hopkirk
Last time round we only had a platoon of Royal Marines based on the islands (about 30 men with a junior officer)

Nowadays we have:
Either a Frigate or Destroyer in the waters around the islands, as well as a offshore patrol vessel
500 soldiers of the British Army, along with Pre-positioned store to support a further 1000 including artillery and engineering equipment
4 Typhoon jets which are more than capable (with a full combat load) of engaging the entire Argentine fast jet fleet before the enemy could close to a range that they could engage
A few thousand RAF and RN personal who are all capable of firing a rifle and holding a position till the rapid reaction force arrives from the UK
A massive Intelligence increase including listening posts, spy satellites, and human intelligence.
All this as well as 225 men in the Falkland Islands Defence Force

Bear in mind also, that the UK has a massive technological advantage over the Argentinians, and our troops have experience of war fighting.
By international law, they belong to Britain.
