What has happened to our society when even our War Memorials are treated with such disrespect.

Some of these these memorials have stood untouched for over 90 years, and it is only just recently they have been defaced in such a way.

The price of scrap metal?
The ease of selling scrap metal? Usually for peanuts compared to actual and sentimental value.

So that is the price we have to pay nowadays is it?

Surely one must first question what persons would stoop to such levels to both remove these metal plaques and to receive them for scrap.
Think th Scrap Merchants have a lot to answer for too.
The scrap dealers could be in no doubt what is was they were buying. Thieves would have no scruples about robbing a memorial.

No you just forget the sins of yesterday.

You conveniently forget people dressing up in fake ARP wardens outfits and robbing houses during air raids

Why?

Vanity

Articles like this are saying - look at you older people you are morally superior to youngsters who are wasting their youth.

They apeal to your vanity and you lap it up
It is disgraceful, though, jake, that memorials are being vandalised in this way. It's not just plaques, a whole bronze statue commemorating the Fallen was stolen a few days back.
No long-standing scrap business in UK would touch this scrap. Methinks it goes to E.Europe.
What is happening to our country?

Political Correctnes.

Human rights Law.

Not teaching history.

Not teaching Patriotism.

No Corporal Punishment.

Every point you make is a major step forward over the past
Current Trading price

92 US cents a pound on Lead
$3.60 a pound on Copper
97 cents a pound on Aluminium
$8.39 for Nickel
$10.01 on Tin
89 cents on Zinc
$34 a troy ounce on Silver.

And look at all the individuals rushing to sell Gold "scrap" (inc many ABers( and the scams out there.

With these price levels, its no wonder Lincoln Cathedral has been raided as well as local churches (across the garden here for about 90 pounds of lead), plus the nicking of those bridge rails last week.

And, for the moment, the only direction medium term for metals, is upwards. Too much of an incentive for thieves who can't be bothered about the sentiments of a war memorial or whatever.
"Not teaching history."

As a history postgrad, I disagree....
Teaching history for junior and secondary pupils.
JTP, i don't see anything wrong with teaching British history, or being patriotic either, and whether you like it or not, and we may be a more mixed country now, don't see that being proud of one's country is anything to be ashamed of. agree to some extent about corporal and capital punishment, but there is nothing that's an effective deterrent in schools, nor in the criminal world. and the idea having to check everything you say in the name of political correctness is surely absurd.
I am ashamed of the people who do this sort of thing, they are thieves and vandals and if caught should go to jail.
// A life-size statue of Olympic champion Steve Ovett has been stolen from a Sussex city.
The bronze sculpture of the middle distance runner was taken from its plinth in Preston Park, Brighton, on Saturday or Sunday.

A council employee reported the statue missing on Monday, having last seen it on Friday.

Police said it had been cut off at the ankles and appealed for anyone with information to contact them. //
