This money could have been better spent years ago on those who are now having to depend on food banks, those who cannot find affordable housing, those who cannot get their child into their nearest school, and those hundreds of our old who are dying each year because they cannot afford to heat their homes, etc, etc.

Charity begins at home.

It would appear that they are only diverting foreign aid from the usually corrupt and un- needy countries back to the UK to provide more housing for refugees.
That does not,I would suggest, solve the problem of the shortage of housing for our own over many years.
Houses cannot be built overnight plus the utilities and other public services required for extra habitation.
Retrocop....we have discussed the lack of affordable housing on AB many times before.

This Government could start building new council houses starting on Monday morning if it so wished. It would take building workers off the dole, give a much needed boost to our manufacturing industries, and provide desperately needed new housing.

We did that straight after WW2 and we could do it again if there was the will to do so.
Here it is with a BBC link ::::

We should continue with the massive house building programme undertaken by the Labour government in their 13 year tenure.

Course it could start on Monday morning. But it won't be finished by Monday afternoon will it???? These refugees are NOW, be realistic for once. Where do they go in the interim? Where are all these houses, cities to be built. All we could do is put them in the same tents they left.

That really made me laugh. :o)

Perhaps their Arab brethren would care to house them in the empty high rise London executive penthouses, in which they have invested some of their vast wealth in?
Kind of sticks in my craw.
Europe dictating to us we must provide/do more and our Government wags its tail.
Someone should remind the European Mafia that the UK have provided more financial aid (£1 Billion) to Syria than the rest of Europe.
Someone should remind Frau Smirkel that it was the UK that Europe crawled to demand bail out money for their flawed Euro and ruddy well got it.
Someone should remind Smirkel we have taken more refugees than Germany since 2000 and that Germany has more space to accommodate more refugees than the UK.
I completely agree. If people want to express their sympathies, start here:

where are the government going to put the number of houses that will be required for this exercise? everyone keeps saying there's plenty of space - but wouldn't it be counter-productive to make all our areas of outstanding natural beauty into areas of outstanding natural tenements? i mean, how many tourists would go out of their way to visit cumbernauld?

Look on the bright side .If we are part of the 40,000 who die this winter that will give the fortunate others we leave behind here space for more migrants to occupy. Their considerations and needs must come before all the other people who have fought wars and paid their taxes all their lives for Great Britain.

Whats going to happen when, the UK rescue teams go to Syria to chose who comes & who dosent to the UK?

Will there be more bloodshed when those that are not selected hear the news?
Mikey's right about housing could be started tomorrow - for our own displaced and homeless.

I'm glad no further money is being taken out of our social budget to accommodate immigrants. We really do have enough problems of our own. E.G. there is a box in our village (it is situated in the church because the building is kept open) and foodstuffs are put in there to be distributed amongst the local needy - we have people who know who they are - and the nearest secondary school also gets specific things from the box, such as energy bars for the children who arrive hungry at school. This is not what one would think of as an impoverished area.

These are people and children who really have a right to expect help from their countrymen. They must come first, surely? I've not even touched on the old folk and heating bills.

So I'm glad that money for immigrant needs will come from the overseas budget, but I'd be even happier if that budget were smaller and sums diverted to help our own first.
