I want to build a high end computer because I will be starting uni in October specialising in astronomy and planetary science, although not majorly relevant in my question, it does play a role.

In the long term I want to have my own radio observatory and analyse data from, say the spectral lines of the sun, or listen to the storms raging on Jupiter. So a machine that can crunch numbers and data is an obvious choice but I simply cannot afford Xeon processors or Tesla/quadro GPUs. I will also play one or two games, nothing huge plus maybe a bit of video editing. I need advice on a workstation capable of covering a broad range of uses. I have a budget of around £1000-£1200. I will also be running multiple monitors (2/3) so let me know if I'd need another gpu!

These are the basics I had in mind:
Core i7 5820k
16gb ddr4 2133mhz
X99 motherboard because of the ram
GTX 960 4GB

Everything else needed to build a functioning PC came to around £990 but was unsure of its use in scientific applications.

A substantial Hard disk - they are available up to 8 terabytes now.
i`d consider some additional cooling with all that hardware.
The best antivirus you can afford. i wont recommend one as the article would then degenerate into which one is best.
A larger than standard LED monitor - I`m thinking at least 24 inch.
Add a Samsung EVO 850 ssd for the operating system and the fastest mechanical drive for storage. I'd go for a GTX 970 if you can. One of the best performance v price gpus on the market.
