I feel this deserves a separate thread, because for the life of me - I don't understand what political advantage the pro-EU arm of the Tory party sees in our staying in the E.U.

Is it simply down to the powerful CBI lobby? The fact that business leaders want the free and easy movement of labour?

I can understand yet CBI's stance, but what exactly is in it for the Conservattives?

'Wrong section' sp1814 ? interesting interpretation.

Anyway Bingo!! dannyk13 gave you the likely answer toot sweet, and the answer was in your own question.
The EU thing has always been a heart and mind debate.

Of course in his heart Cameron does not want foreigners telling us what to do and be making our laws.
But in his mind, he knows it is a gang we need to be part of for jobs, for exports, for wealth creation and the country's prosperity.

Which is why the Tories are split. Those ruled by their brains want to stay in, those ruled by their hearts (probably because they have a feeble brain) want to come out.

This only afflicts Tories because the bit about foreigners ruling us is blooix anyway
...law making and direction of the EU is a collective process. The strong players in the EU, France and German get as much power as we allow them. If we engage with Europe and participate and lead then more things we like will happen.
Unfortunately Cameron gets the worse of both worlds by effectively withdrawing from any political participation, so a lot happens which he and his party don't like.
So, only the feeble minded want us to leave the EU?
As for it only afflicting the conservatives, I believe the next Labour leader, Corbyn, wants us out.
Would have thought it would cost billions to stay but even more to leave and maybe he like the song contest
Svejk,
I did not say only the feeble minded want out. I said Conservative MPs are afflicted with this mindset because of their xenophobia.

Many leftwingers want out, but for entirely different reasons. They believe the EU is an ultra Conservative organisation that robs the poor.
///Those ruled by their brains want to stay in, those ruled by their hearts (probably because they have a feeble brain) want to come out./// ?
Svejk,
I was talking about why the Conservative Party split on Europe. Specifically, I was referring to Conservative MPs.

I did not mean ALL people who oppose the EU are feeble minded.
the Tories see themselves as the business party and businesses want to stay in, for the convenient export market as well as the cheap labour. But the Tories also see themselves as the party of British, if not English, sovereignty, and that means leaving. They've been split over this for decades. Whichever way a referendum goes, it may settle the Tory divisions for good, so that would be a nice leaving present from Cameron to his party.
