Chicago song 25 or 6 to 4

anyone any ideas on something thats been puzzling me for years. One of my fave songs of all time is Chicago's '25 or 6 to 4' but does anyone know what it means? I've gone thru the lyrics but cannot work it out. Is it an americanism for something that we brits do not use? Please help someone. Thanks

It was the time just before they wrote the song.
One the band asked the time and was told:
It's 25 or 6 to four. (Meaning it's 25 minutes or 26 minutes to four)
