I've just taken up the drums after an absence of 25 years (re-living my youth !!!). I've got myself a nice kit made by "session pro" but it has been upgraded (got the whole kits which included 3 ludwig cymbals for £67 !!!)

The snare sounds nice and the base drum does too thanks to a pillow inside to dampen the sound a bit.

My problem is concerning the 3 Toms (12" & 13" mounted and 16" floor). They sound very "brass band" rather than "rock band" if you get what i mean. I want a heavy deep sound rather than the "boing" i get now.

Could i do the same as the base drum and add a dampener to each drum or would changing the skins from the current "Evans generic G1" to maybe remo skins or something be better.

Or do you have any better suggestions ? My 11 year old daughter is just learning to play them via school and i want then to sound really nice.

Any help most appreciated

I put this to my semi-pro drummer hubby. He suggests Remo Pinstripe heads, maybe Evans G2, but the Remo will be cheaper.

As far as dampening them, it's not really recommended because the drums should be allowed to 'sing', but if you decide to dampen, he suggests a product called Moongel, which is the stuff they fill wrist rests and the like with. You should be able to get it from a good drum shop.

He also recommends www.mikedolbear.com . It's a great forum for drummers at all levels and everyone's very friendly and helpful. I've met a few of them through my bloke and I'm happy to say they're as nice in life as they are online.

Happy whacking! ;-)
