Surround sound

I just got a new computer with surround sound (5.1) speakers.

As a newcomer to this, my question is whether all music, DVDs etc. can be played as surround sound, or does it depend on the individual CD, for example?

I have done the setup test, which shows all the speakers are working, but otherwise the music seems to be coming just from the front left and front right speakers.

music CD's are only recorded in normal stereo, so only 2 channels. left and right. You can play with the audio settings on the computer to give them virtual surround sound if you want.

DVD's are recorded with surround sound.. you will get surround from them automatically.

Games and other stuff it depends if they are written to support surround sound or not.

Thank you... do you have any idea how I change the computer settings to get virtual surround sound for CDs? I've had a look but I can't find anything.

It's Windows Vista Ultimate, the speakers say Hercules on them, and the computer says Realtek High Definition Audio.
