I was at my sister's house last night when my niece came home. She had been at a pub Quiz Night with a few friends. She asked us a few of the questions that they had struggled with, when she came up with this gem: "which famous opera singer died on the same day as Marc Bolan"?
"Maria Callas", I replied. "no, it was a bloke. I can't remember his name". Definitely Maria Callas, I argued
"Dur!!!! Definitely a bloke" she responded. She couldn't remember his name, so she phoned her mate. "Told you it was a bloke," she said "Mark Ellis"
I give up.

Similar to this lady singing the Harry Nilsson (and Maria Carey) classic.

Imagine you are in a noisy pub......say Maria Callas out loud...then say Mark Ellis out loud.....
If you don't know of Maria Callas you will hear Mark Ellis for both....and spend your life thinking he was a famous opera singer...now dead...
Unless you support Shrewsbury Town....then you will be totally confused....☺

Similar thing happened on subtitles of a quiz show I was watching a few weeks ago.
Question was, who wrote Darling Buds of May .
Contestant answered H E Bates, subtitle for this was A G Bates.
But Hopkirk makes a good point. I often scoff at the ignorance of contestants about Sixties culture, then fail abysmally on modern music questions which contestants answer easily. It's all pot luck really.
