I was at my sister's house last night when my niece came home. She had been at a pub Quiz Night with a few friends. She asked us a few of the questions that they had struggled with, when she came up with this gem: "which famous opera singer died on the same day as Marc Bolan"?
"Maria Callas", I replied. "no, it was a bloke. I can't remember his name". Definitely Maria Callas, I argued
"Dur!!!! Definitely a bloke" she responded. She couldn't remember his name, so she phoned her mate. "Told you it was a bloke," she said "Mark Ellis"
I give up.

sorry I don't get it?
Nice one thesecond - though to be honest I'm sure my school curriculum didn't include opera singers and hopefully the one today doesn't either.
I don't get it either.
The niece heard the name wrong and because she had never heard of the most famous soprano of the 20th century before, she didn't know that she had made a mistake either.
Mind you, I bet there's a lot of recent culture that she knows, but is a mystery to you.
I don't get it either.
Rtaxron.... I explained this at 17:25...what else don't you understand ?
I guess you had to be there.
Imagine you are in a noisy pub......say Maria Callas out loud...then say Mark Ellis out loud.....
If you don't know of Maria Callas you will hear Mark Ellis for both....and spend your life thinking he was a famous opera singer...now dead...

Unless you support Shrewsbury Town....then you will be totally confused....☺

maria callas sound nothing like Mark Ellis

mariac allas? mari-ac -allas? must be pretty drunk or deaf to confuse the two.
It's hard work around here at times.
Similar thing happened on subtitles of a quiz show I was watching a few weeks ago.

Question was, who wrote Darling Buds of May .

Contestant answered H E Bates, subtitle for this was A G Bates.

But Hopkirk makes a good point. I often scoff at the ignorance of contestants about Sixties culture, then fail abysmally on modern music questions which contestants answer easily. It's all pot luck really.
Svejk, it most certainly is; you mark my words or ellis.
What's there to get ? She and her mate heard the answer incorrectly and was convinced they had it right.
It somewhat reminds me of Mike Hunt being paged in a bar.
Like thesecondlaw...I give up as well !
Ah, Mikey...just be thankful you have a sense of humour and an imagination........xx
