best way to clean a guitar

i've bought a second hand guitar from ebay and it's been stood, unplayed, for a long time.
What's the best way to get the dust from out of the nooks and crannies? (Don't know the technical terms - lol - it's not for me!)
Just soap and water and a cotton bud?

You need to be very careful because if you disturb the fabric of the wood, you will alter the tone of the guitar.

I would have a word with your local instrument supplier about how to proceed - maybe take the guitar in for them to have a look at, and get some professional advice.

Sight unseen, it's difficult to advise you properly.

Why not go along to your friendly garage mechanic and ask him to blow it off with compressed air.

ooh ratter, that's a good idea. That wouldn't effect anything would it?
Definitely no water. A soft paintbrush would do it.
"soap and water"

i didn't mean WET water!
Just slightly damp cotton bud - or maybe i could chuck it in the bath with some matey ;0)
Just get the pressure washer out....
I want some of crisgal's dry water..
you could buy a guitar cleaning kit?

It's special dehydrated water, to make it back into water you just add water.
I`d use a puffer brush (that`s used for cleaning camera lenses)

pmsl you daft sods :)
can of compressed air the type for pc's or like was said local garage, then some furniture polish
When you replace the strings it will make things easier to access for a quick wipe. A good guitar shop will do the whole job for a fixed price and start you off in tune.
