I thought it was legal to do that - but with the strange laws we have - are you supposed to get out of the vehicle???

For the purpose of the Act relating to driving whilst using a mobile phone:
the law defines a person as “driving” even if the vehicle is stationary but the engine is running.
So, with the engine turned off, no offence.

However, under new proposals by Gordon Brown, in future, everything in the UK will be illegal until you can prove it's not. In the interests of justice, though, you will be given 42 days in which to defend yourself - but only if you can guess what the charge is...

Is an ordinary phone one without Bluetooth or a camera ?.
How about getting out and sitting in the back seat, that would really confuse plod.
Or if the Police do pull up, just switch your phone for an old TV remote control and start speaking into that.
Most nutters are let off, it saves on paperwork !

Yes, the operative word in this sentence being "off" the engine has to be switched off for you to be on the right side of the law, so no problem there. What if the car you are in is electric, or solar powered, though?
