my 406 has an intermittent fault that causes the engine to cut out when junctions ,traffic lights etc are approached. The engine can easily be restarted and the problem may not occur again for many days.My local garage cannot find a fault has anyone had such an experience with a 406 ?

further to eckie's ans. i do not have to wait any length of time, engine will restart either by key or dipping clutch if car still moving
My 406 3.0 Coupe does this as well. i took it to a main dealer and they told me the car was fine. (typical) I am going to leave it with them overnight so they can live through the problem, not just hook it up to their computer. I'll post the results.

I find swearing at the car helps...

I have a peugeot 406 1997 auto-saloon. i also experience an intermitant fault with the car stalling. this tends to happen after decelerating & pulling away agian. Just to let you know that i have changed the following: Spark Plugs,

Fuel Feeder Pipes,

Fuel Filter,

Oil & Filter,

Engine Flush,

Catalytic Converter, Centre & Rear Box,

Airfilter.

In all, around 300 in parts and none of these have made a difference, so save you money untill someone finds the real cure.

I'll let you know if io do.

Hi, I also have a 406 and have been experiencing problems, they present as follows;
When starting car prior to driving off, engine is reluctant to idle. when eventually mobile, the engine cuts out when accelerator pedal is released to slow down, turn or brake. Also has a habit of over-revving when in neutral and I don't have my feet on any of the pedals. Also engine keeps running for about 10 seconds when switched off and key removed!
I suggest you check out the problems that are being had with the NEW 206 - these seem to be well established problems that are becoming a hallmark of Peugeot cars.
Mine is currently in the Peugeot dealers service centre being checked over and I am expecting to go grey or totally bald when I get their bill - for not finding the fault!
Hi,
I hope you have had some joy finding the fault on your car, if you haven't, ask your mechanic to check the fuel injector, -mine was replaced and all is now well - the garage chap did tell me that it didn't show on the diagnostic computer though. (It wasn't the main dealer that fixed it - they couldn't find the fault even when they had the car for 3 days)
Have u tried the ht lead from the coil,i had a problem ages ago,it started cutting out just as i went to a junction, started straight back up no problem, the ht lead was breaking down when warm
Hello fellow peugeot 406 owners with cutting out problems. I hate to admit that I am pleased other people have had this problem too. As it only started today, I have only thus far tried swearing at it, will thrash it tommorrow morning very hard.
Geoff, if you still log in, what is an HT lead? I'll ring my mechanic about the fuel injector tommorrow.
I have a similar problem with my 406 manual saloon. Sometimes the Engine Control Unit is unable to control the flow of petrol into the engine so that the revs fall below 8,000 causing the car to stall. In addition to this the car will stop accelerating, and even decelerate, becoming totally unresponsive to the accelerator, for up to 10 seconds while driving at speed (ie, 60 or 70 mph) and then start behaving normally.

I believe the problem is between the ECU and the sensors it uses to measure the flow of petrol. (Replacing spark plugs, filters, etc, will have no effect.) My garage has replaced two of the sensors (as well as the catalytic converter) and still this problem occurs intermittently. I may have to replace the ECU but I just want the problem solved.
I got the Peugeot 406 2L Desiel HDI 90. Its year 2000. the engine was cutting off time to time. Then i took to the local garage and they did a full diagnossis scan but couldnt find any fault. They said they clean injectors, re programme trip computer and sencers.....ect..ect. and charged me £160. After two days car stoped again and couldnt start at all. I called the AA guy and he found the fuel pump fuse has gone. its a 15AMP fuse and he said its a common problem in Peugeot 406.

If you got the same problem please check the fuse box for the fuel pump fuse. its blue colour 15AMP fuse. This may work for some of you. hope this help you guys as these blady french cars needs a fortune to maintain and run.

Regards....Kes
