Whats up with the transmission on this Audi A4?

Ok, a friend has an Audi A4 1997 1.9TDi which is automatic transmission, he says has a problem that when the car is automatically changing gear from 1st to 2nd the revs jump up to about around 4000rpm, he says the car drives fine but that problem is annoying him...
