Unmarked Police Vehicles

Can anyone tell me if there are any regulations with regards to the use of unmarked police cars on 'A' roads ?
I have noticed that several roads have signs giving prior warning that these vehicles are in use. Is this a must ?

I wouldn't have thought so, as you will adjust your actions while the police are there then speed up once you have passed them.
