Trying to work out how much it would cost in petrol to drive 250 miles. I looked up the technical specification of my car and the choices are: Urban = 25.9 MPG Extra Urban = 44.1 MPG Combined = 35.3 MPG Am I correct in assuming that combined is motorways? I have come up with a price of £38.44 to drive there, based on my fuel consumption being 35.3MPG and an average petrol cost of £119.4. Is this correct? I realise that this figure isn't hard and fast, I know that my speed, tyre pressure etc., are to be taken into account, but for estimating purposes, this is what I come up with. Do you?

I get it to £38.75, so close enough.

Great stuff, is the 'Combined' a calculation for motorways? What's the difference between 'Urban' and 'Extra Urban'?

Traffic jams, I guess. :)

Extra-urban is anything that is not town/city driving where you are stop/start all the time. Extra meaning outside in this case.

In other words, for your distance of 250 miles, where you will drive mostly on motorways, you will get closer to 44.1 mpg than 25.9 mpg. Judging it at the middle mark of 35.3 mpg would be sensible, though you ought to get more MPG than this if you are not doing much urban driving.

Brilliant, thank you very much :o)

The combined figure uses the urban and the extra-urban data but gives more weight to the extra-urban data since it covers a test over a greater distance.
The test does not cover the use of either heater or air con so either or both would further increase your petrol consumption.

I know it doesn't, which is why I said I was aware other things need to be taking into consideration, but for ball park figure purposes...... :o)

What about if you get stuck in a funeral or wedding? Did you make allocations for that?

PMSL! I spoke to God last night, he has promised me that nobody will die so there won't be any funeral hold ups :o)

Fill up, complete the journey and then fill up again, hey presto as if by magic you will know exactly how much petrol you WILL have used, not a guesstimate from 'official' figures.

I'd rather have some idea of how much I am looking to set aside, thanks all the same though.
