I read a book a couple of years ago where the author was travelling through Ireland and at one point thought he had a dead crow trapped in his car exhaust. It was very much in the style of Pete McCarthy/Bill Bryson/Tim Moore. Any clues?

It WAS Pete McCarthy, "McCarthy's Bar".

Dead right Brawburd, it was McCarthy's bar and a fantastic book it was, highly recommended and the car was the Volvo he'd bought on the cheap.
