Economical Automatics

My dad is considering buying an automatic, but we don't know much about which ones are good value and which are not. He's looking for a small car, not unlike the Clio he currently drives.

Any feed back please on which automatic is the best value, and which is the most reliable?

New or used?

toyota corolla's are super reliable for around �12k new. I had one for a week when mine was in for a service and it was excellent. The build was impressive to.

I have a Nissan Micra 1.2 Automatic been vary reliable

I drive a Vauxhall Astra Estate automatic which I find to be great for my needs and returns around 36mpg.
I know it's not everyone's idea of an ideal motor but I'm more than happy with it in terms of economy, smoothness, and reliability.
