Firstly check and fix your driving! what is your MPG?

And what, might I ask, do you mean by "fix your driving"?

At last check, the little beast was doing about 10p a mile at current prices.

As said check the MPG carefully first. Some things to think about. Could you have a fuel leak? May sound stupid but could be a possibility? Can you smell fuel at all, maybe do a visual check of the tank area, fuel lines. Be careful. Other things that could cause excessive fuel consumption are overfuelling. Has the car been serviced recently? Simple things like new air filter and plugs can make a difference. Also might be worth checking to make sure you don't have an air leak anywhere (a trick is to spray WD40 around the intake/injector housing on idle, if you hear a change in the revs could indicate a leak). Is the car producing black smoke under acceleration at all? For about 40 you could get the ECU plugged in at a garage and they could do a diagnostic for you - would show any faultu sensors.
