Renault Clio 1.4 16v stalling problem

I have recently purchased a Renault Clio 1.4 16v through a private sale. The car is an 02' reg, one owner and had only done 17,500miles when I got it a month ago. Since then I have racked up 1,000miles on my own!

Recently I have had problems with the car stalling when the engine is cold. Usually it starts fine when just turning the ignition (revs settle between around 500-1,000rev/min) but as soon as I press the accelerator (with the gears in neutral) or clutch to change gear the revs just plumet and the car stalls! Does anyone have any suggestions of why this might be and what I can do to fix it?
