Hi, hope someone can help. I tow an offroad car with an A-frame, which means all 4 wheels of the towed car are on the road. The offroad car is not taxed or insured. I have been told that if the car offroad car has no No. plates and is registered scrapped then it can classed as a trailer and therefore be towed using a lightboard. The local police don't seem to know what the law is and said that they would probably turn a blind eye, which isn't really a lot of help. Can anyone throw some light on the subject please.

I think I am right when I say that if you regard it as a trailer, then due to the weight it should be braked. Even if the car was taxed and insured and towed on an "A" frame with no one at the controls, it would still be regarded as a trailer. I would keep off motorways, as I think the motorway Police regard an "A" frame as a "recovery method" and not as a way of transporting untaxed and unregistered vehicles or over 'braking weight' trailers. As for the Police not knowing the regulations, I would ask a Traffic Cop and not my local station.
