Just received my application for my first photo ID driving licence.
As I have a category that enables me to ride a large cc motorbike,
I have read elsewhere, that some people have had problems of categories being omitted, when surrendering their old pink paper licence for the photo ID

yes I have some knowledge of this so get a proper copy and ideally get it notorised. It's a faff but better than losing categories. This happened to someone I know and DVLA would not budge without evidence and they had to re do their test. It was featured on watchdog some time ago and they've probably sorted the issue but wise to take precautions.
You don't need to send your paper licence off when you apply for your photo card; you just have to promise to destroy it when the new one arrives. I didn't fancy being without licence whilst the application went through, so I kept my old one. If you're really bothered photograph the paper one and then check the new one carefully when you get it.
