I suppose, but a car that has done only 740 miles since MOT last June....should it get waved bye bye in favour of free bus pass and taxis?

Bathy....the day you get rid of the car, will be the first day that your regret getting rid of the car !

Keep your freedom !
You are the only one that knows if the ease and convenience of your own transport is worthwhile, not a lot of mileage but as I say it's convenient.
Never regretted getting rid of mine.Certainly financially better off.
Keep it Baths. Even if it's only for nipping to the garden centre when the mood takes you. Your freedom is more important than the money you would save.
Actually I should have said MY freedom, you may feel differently.
depends - where were those 740 miles? How much would doing them by taxi cost? How much will webuyanycar.com give you for it? Everybody's sums will differ.
You can buy a lot of taxis for the cost of the insurance, not to mention the cost of the Road Fund Licence (whatever it's called this week) and the depreciation and servicing.
i would keep the car. it is to my sorrow that i don't drive.
Assuming the car is not worth all that much (and therefore depreciation is negligible)

Insurance £200, Tax £100, Service + MoT £200

So that's 50 £10 taxi rides - only one out/back journey per fortnight.

I'd say that says "keep the car until it dies or has a big bill" and then reconsider.

Oh wow, that's a surprise! I thought it would be an overwhelming "get rid" ;)
The trouble with keeping the car is I can't back it out of very narrow drive..(92"), and I'm actually banned by the neighbours who have had to pick me up from my falls on my way to getting in it. Am seeing Neurologist later on this week, shall see what he says. Many thanks, Ooh just remembered, I use it to go to town, Sainsbury's, Asda and the library.

Sunny-D, why do you presume the car isn't worth much?

Allen, I'm so sorry to read what happened to you :(
My Dad was an amputee, and managed fine in his auto Micra.
As for finding a different car....even Minis are too wide, ditto the smallest Fiat !

The availability of buses in your area is, of course, a factor which needs to be considered.

When I lived in Sheffield I never bothered learning to drive because there were 13 buses an hour from stops near to my home into the city centre. There was also a good evening and Sunday service, together with a skeleton service running throughout the night. (There were even buses on Christmas Day). It was also possible to get a taxi quickly at any time of day or night, without pre-booking.

One of the first things I did when I moved to Suffolk was to take driving lessons, pass my test and buy a car. In some parts of coastal Suffolk there's only one bus (to and from the nearest town with shops) per month. In those same areas you can have a taxi at any time you want it but only if you book before 6pm (because that's when the taxi offices shut). So if a friend, who lives a few miles away, phones you at just after 6 to invite you round for a drink and some supper, there's no way of getting there unless one of you drives.

The part of Suffolk where I live actually has a good daytime service (every half hour) but there are no evening buses to get me to pubs, cinemas and theatres. (Fortunately there's a train service but that doesn't help people along the bus route who don't live near to a rail station). Having a free bus pass isn't much use if there aren't any buses!

Baldric...well researched! I'm guessing that proves S-D right ;)
Thanks allen, the OT folk have been already, and the car was never mentioned. They've given me a perching stool, which is good for ironing,. summat round toilet, which is great, and a 4 wheeled trolley with 2 trays on it.which I've never used and is just taking up much needed space in this small bungalow,. keep meaning to phone them and get it taken away

Hi Buenchico. It must be a pain having so few buses. There's about 6 an hour if I do the quite short walk from home to the bus stop.
Allen, sorry, forgot to mention, there's no way the drive can be widened.
