Who would be happy with this?

The hijab I haven't got a problem with (unless it is worn through no choice of the wearer) But no ... no burka.

Same as you. I don't have a problem with the hijab but no to a burka.
I would make West Midlands Police Chief Constable, David Thompson, wear one if only to cover up his smug mush.
You cannot be serious!
The piece is careful not to commit itself.

The police spokesman is busy saying no-one has asked, but it would have to be considered.

What he is careful not to say is, 'And having been considered, it has been rejected.'

Because the notion of a fully covered face is simply not feasible in a profession where communication is absolutely essential, and facial expression and body language are used to enforce control and authority, and to defuse potentially violent situations.

So it is a headline, but that's what it will remain.
Is the burka the one that makes them look like walking black postboxes?

My city isn't what you call multicultural. I would say 95%+ white european.

It seems that is is already agreed in Scotland http://www.express.co.uk/news/uk/703150/Police-Scotland-Muslim-hijab-uniform-attract-more-women
Well , there are circumstances under which , wearing the burka shouldn't be a problem .

However in this example , definitely not .
You should be able to see the facial features of the person 'purporting' to be a police officer.

If she came knocking on my door - i would not allow her to enter
Perhaps plod wants all police personnel with their identities covered up. Then we could never identify any of them who commit misdemeanors. I bet you if I took to walking the streets in a balaclava, or a shemagh scarf wrapped around my head I would be pulled P.D.Q.
Such officers would probably have to attend court to give evidence at some point.

A burkha would not be acceptable in those circumstances.
The mirror. ( MAY let ) made up story .
Whilst it's fair to consider it, I feel the Hijab is a good compromise.

Far too many people would find the Burka alarming.
Recruiting and boosting the numbers of BME groups in the police should not be effected by the incentive of being able to wear the burka.
Seriously??
Rather than acting in the name of diversity, this type of thing encourages division.

We do not need police officers who only want to join the service if they can wear what they please.

And how will allowing the wearing of traditional Islamic dress increase the number of black and minority ethnic (BME) officers?

Unless of course they were all Muslims, so why didn't it say that the West Midlands Police are looking at ways to increase the number of Muslim police officers?

Is it is then we might see some Police cars, screeching to a halt while the officer jumps out of the car, lays his or hers mat on the floor and kneels in the direction of Mecca?
Question Author
I'm sure West Midlands Police Chief Constable, David Thompson will be in contact with the Mirror if this is a made up story, Anne ... what say you?
I think the response is a standard one to do with employment law.....if an employee requests to do something that involves a change to T and C of employment, the general rule is that the employer has to consider it and have a “good” reason for refusing if they do refuse.
AOG - //Is it is then we might see some Police cars, screeching to a halt while the officer jumps out of the car, lays his or hers mat on the floor and kneels in the direction of Mecca? //

Only if we see portly gentlemen wearing Union flag waistcoats and with a bulldog on a lead singing Rule Britannia at the tops of their fruity voices.

So we send schoolkids home for minor uniform infringements, but plod thinks it's a good idea to make their uniform practically meaningless. Bunch of juffle heads all of them.
Proposed new female police officer's uniform, so as to attach more Western/British women into the force.
