I want to hang a mirror which weighs about 3pounds above a basin. The wall in the area is just plasterboard. Is it possible to do this securely and if so what hooks/nails should I use?

At that weight I think I'd be reluctant to put it anywhere where the wooden frame behind the plasterboard can not be screwed into.

See if you can find a horizontal one to screw into.
I have used that type to hang a mirror on plaster board but not sure how heavy it was.
I've put curtain rails up with them and hung curtains weighing far more than 3lbs.
Probably a better choice due to requiring a smaller hole to take the screw.
Best to go for a metal " toggle " plasterboard fixing rather than the "worm " type aluminium or plastic ones advertised as plasterboard fixing.
Whatever avenue you choose to take Alido, make sure you check that there are no Elec Wires at the point of drilling for the Hanging.
