ok I have looked this up on DVLA and it does indeed say it was registered in 1958 but that format plate started in 1963 so how does this car have one? If it was imported in 1963 it still should have been given a 1958 number as they do appear to know the date of first registration. I'm usually pretty good with car reg numbers but this has got me stumped, cheers

It's got me to, TTT.
The only thing I can think of is I wonder if back in the day it had a new engine in 1963, maybe back then a new engine = new registration number.
Perhaps the rule about plates not making a car appear younger were brought in later, and aren't retrospective.
Question Author
yeah but no one would add that number over a 58 one, the format is much more desirable.
The original plate retained as a private number and the 1963 plate issued as a replacement? I also think the rule about not making a car appear younger was not made until after 1963.
Question Author
that would explain it Eddie, they may not have had the rule then but i thought they still issued a correct aged plate but it would seem they did not. Also the seller claims to have the original reg doc.
Only thing I can think offhand, is that the car was re-built using various different Ford Popular parts ie Engine, Body etc and had to be re-registered.

The bonnet does not have the Ford oval emblem either.
The 'Blue Oval' was a lot later than 1963 Slack Alice. It was just the word FORD in sloping letters back in 1958 and 1963 and later still.

Scroll to 1927
//The new Model A for 1927 was the first Ford vehicle to carry the Ford oval as a radiator badge///

Most models just had the 'Ford Script' Logo without the oval

Just put the reg into this site. Comes up as registered 1958 but untaxed.

No tax due, Tony, it's vintage.
I know, but in the day's of old when a tax disc had to be displayed you still had a tax disc even if you payed zilch c'us it was pre 1973.
According to that the tax was due on the 1st April 1989.
I know, wonder what happened there !.
Perhaps it's been in storage.
Mmmmmmm, maybe.
Question Author
i did check that tony, it does need taxing to be on the road, ie insurance checked, even though there is no cost.
There is no longer an insurance check when taxing a car.
Going on the owners description it most probably has been in storage since 1989 and he has made a start on recommissioning it , but still needs work to finish it.
Question Author
hopkirk, they check the MIDB surely??
