During a recent police clamp down on unsafe / unroadworthy vehicles a couple of motorists pulling trailers were done for not passing a trailer test.
Does this test apply to all trailers and are caravans included.

It depends on your licence - it is not one rule for all.... https://www.gov.uk/towing-with-car

Caravans do come under these regulations:

"“trailer” means a vehicle drawn by a motor vehicle"

That's from: http://www.legislation.gov.uk/ukpga/1988/52/section/185
Sigma, there is more to pulling a trailer than you think.
I think if you passed your test before 1997 then you can tow trailers and caravans. If you only passed your test since then you can't just hitch one up and drive off. There must be some additional test needed. Even if you did pass your test pre '97 it would not be a bad idea to get some tuition before towing for the first time, it isn't easy.
Going forwards is easy, it's cornering and reversing that's hard. I have driven allsorts as a wrecker driver but always hated reversing.
Baza, the secret of reversing is taking your time, too fast & due to the length of the trailer, you will loose it.
