It seems it is the way things go. Newcomers, be they countries or companies, sell low quality stuff and are a laughing stock, until they improve enough to capitalise on their gained, sizeable, market share; and then they become a premium brand/location.
I remember laughing at Japanese cameras when they appeared in the early 60's.
But its not a Skoda anymore - its a polo - more or less. Its not cheap either.
I am amazed that VW kept the brand. I still cant think of skoda without at least a reference back to the early models

We've got an Octavia VRS Estate, 220bhp, 155mph and 0-62mph takes 6.8 seconds. Good build quality, great handling and quickest dog carrier we've had to date, it's a lot of fun. I very often use it in preference to the Beemer.

Things changed dramatically when VW took over. Everything comes out of the VW/Audi parts bins now. They are even distant cousins of the Bugatti Veyron.
I have a Skoda Octavia.

Bought it second hand from a dealer about 4 years ago and never had a problem with it.

Very roomy inside and a HUGE boot.

And a lot cheaper to buy than a Mondeo or equivalent.
I'm another happy Octavia driver. And Jeremy Clarkson described the Skoda Yeti as "the best car in the world".
All the modern skodas are VWs
So are Bentleys
I have had 3 in the past, one rear engined the other 2 had the engine in the front, no trouble with any of them, I did miss the tow rope, but that is another story.
