Look for the timing marks on the lower pulley, position it with the notches in the housing, take off No1 lead, take out plug 1, get a timing light & see if it lights up, If no Timing light, just use a long thin screwdriver or a torch to see when plug No1 is at T.D.C.
out of interest why do you need to know this ?

Hi Chas, the reason is I might have to change the water pump.
What has the water pump to do with the Timing 1944?
Question Author
According to the manual it's now part of the timing belt change. In fact on my model the tensioner is bolted to it.
many techs advise changing w/pumps when doing cam belt changes , not always advised by the manufacturers but certain models are prone to w/pumps failing and as you are halfway into the job with the belts its a good precaution to change the pump at the same time.
Im assuming this is a zetec engine ? if my memory is correct you will also need a camshaft locking tool, also there is a tool(pin) to lock the crank in the correct position.
