Seriously... I think the purpose of traffic lights is to give drivers on side streets a fair chance. In a country with rather more traffic than Addis, they're never going to be able to get across, or into, a main road unless there's some specific arrangement for allowing them to do so. Roundabouts don't do the job, as they prioritise the main direction of travel too.

a scant few minutes ago, driving back to the office through the retail park. i slowed and stopped at the lights as they went orange so a couple of pedestrians waiting started to cross, then as there wasn't any beeping sound they stopped in the middle of the crossing and didn't move until the beeping started then they carried on crossing.
As the lights changed back to green for me, a woman with a baby in a pram walked out in front of me - the other car opposite had started to move & had to stop sharpish, the woman seemed oblivious
