I can put car into all gears , when stationary . Pegeout 307 1.4

However car wont move - i.e. put car in first gear , release clutch and car stalls when the 'biting' point is reached . You can almost feel it resisting.

Any ideas ?

Is the handbrake on?
Question Author
Do i look like a dizzy blonde ?
Handbrake frozen on Baz. Even though the handle moves ok.
not if your avatar is an accurate representation
Brakes might be jammed
Yep - brakes frozen or handbrake cable is snagged somewhere would be my guess.

Will it move if you select reverse?
Or brake pads rusted onto discs, if it was wet when last driven & has stood for a few days.

Just to expand - i was driving it the other day when i heard a sort of 'squealing' noise . Some miles later that day it lost drive.

The gearbox has been noisy for a while now .

The recovery guy who towed me home thinks it's the bearings / differential in the gear box .
He also said he could smell gear box oil.

That info ^^^ would have been most helpful in the OP
Question Author
Yes i know , that's why i thought i better expand on the problem
The gear box is f*ucked.
Has the car been serviced? when was the G/Box oil last checked?
Question Author
Gear box oil was last checked Nov 12
Do you need a new clutch?
Question Author
I can get all gears , so i wouldn't have thought that the clutch was the problem
It could be stuck in one of the high gears. Jack the car up so that the drive wheels are off the ground, chock the wheels that are on the ground, front and rear.and see if the wheels turn when you put it in gear and engage the clutch with the engine running at tickover,.
If the front wheels do turn then jack up the back wheels chock the front wheels and check that the rear wheels can be turned by hand with the handbrake off.
