Car key replacements costing £250

In the Sunday Times yesterday it was reported that some garages charge £250 to replace the special keys supplied with some new cars. Two people had written in to say that they had found it easy to open up the key and solder the loose connection into place and avoid being ripped off.

I guess it would depend on what was wrong with it. Replacement not being the same as repair.
And that's nothing to the faff if you can't find the keys! You have to drive the car in for them to recode the new key to match the car. That's not easy when you have no keys. My dealership helpfully suggested that I get the RAC to tow or take the car in on a trailer because the dealership hadn't got a tow truck or low-loader!
You need a spare set for that sort of eventuality. Mine came with a 2nd set as part of the purchase.
Depending how long this so-called special key lasted, I would say it's not fit for purpose!
They wanted eighty quid to supply me with a spare key, I thought that was bad enough.
What car Boxy?
Diahatsu Sirion, TWR, nothing special
Rip off merchants, did you try Google?
No, I found the spare key instead... :-D
A couple of years ago a friend lost her keys walking the dog and got quoted well in excess of £250 for replacement. Fortunately next-door's police dog was able to sniff them out, literally.
Ok, if time is spent looking by anyone, you can come up trumps on either EBay or Google, I bought some watch parts a while ago " Fingers" that was me sorted, someone seen the same ad on ebay & contacted me for one of these fingers that he had been trying ages to find but could not untill he seen that I had won it, I sent him the rest of the pack as I did not need them.
So what's your question?
