I had an car Insurance fully comp policy with maximum no claims (protected) due to work issues I sold my car, the policy then lapsed just over one year ago, if I decide to buy another car have I lost all my no claims discount? Do you have to keep continuous cover?

This may vary with individual companies - why not give your last insurer a ring (on a freephone number, if possible!). Hope you've kept proof of your entitlement to max. NCD.
i think you have to use it within 2 years
I stopped insuring my car for about a year and when i got a new policy the new company were fine about the gap. They just asked for proof. I was relieved because it was a 10 year NCD
Two years according to this.

I believe not. Once the car has been sold, the policy and all insurance that you have with that car is not going to be allowed to continuously cover your next one. Anyway, there are companies that offer full coverage car insurance. You may just check it out.
