its a X18XE and 1.8, sorry, forgot to say, I was extremely tired last night! lol I have tried doing the belt again and now it won't even start, I am thinking the valves may be bent which isn't a problem as we have a spare head which we can put on but still have the problem of timing. The last couple of times i have tried I, the belt has slipped to the extent where the cam alignment markings are moving 180 degrees. i.e. fit belt with crank and cam markings lined up, turn engine on starter motor, turn engine by hand until crank markings meet up, camshaft markings are 180 degrees out now. what could be causing this?
go here for the belt set up (timing marks)

if in doubt get someone who knows what they are doing before you write the engine off
Do you know Benny, you are one heel of a lad, you have gone through 2 cars & now having trouble with this one ( are you made of money lol) doing a cam belt change is not as you now know changing a fan belt, to start something like a belt you have to have a clear mind as you will now know, whilst you where doing the job did you replace the tensions? I bet not, did you change the Fan belt/ did you fill up with Summer / Winter coolant? If you keep doing silly things like this Benny you are going to be skint, take heed if you are unsure how to do things, " Do not do it" this may be an expensive lesson learnt. I hope all works out well for you.

180- out is ok.
Camshaft rotates half engine speed (two rotations on crank pulley to one of the cam gear)
Do NOT crank on starter after you fitted and tensioned a belt until you have turned over at least twice by hand and checked tension again.
You should MAKE SURE belt is fitted tightly to RHS (drive side) when fitting it .. slack to LHS (idler/adjuster side)

Make sure tensioner indicator is between marks when finished when turning .. and make sure lock bolt is correctly tightened.
Those diagrams should be ok for you.

Regarding starting .. check any sensors on head are re-connected.

To check if you've buggered valves .. again make sure timing correct .. and do a compression test with a gauge on each pot ... there are 4 of those :)
