Car wont start. rover 216

Went to my car last night to go home but nothing happened when i pressed the key fob to unlock(central locking).I unlocked car drivers door using key , went to start but absolutely nothing happened.Checked fuses they're ok.Checked battery which was as dead as a dodo! Tried jumpstarting the car with a colleague but when we done this the neutral lead on the jump leads started to melt as soon as we had attached both sets of leads!!! Checked that we'd got leads on right i.e positive+ to + and- to - which we had.
i'd be grateful for any ideas advice, thanks.

Cheap thin jump leads.

If the battery is old, consider replacing it, or you will just get problems again.

I was talking to an AA patrolman yesterday, saying it should be quiet for him. Apparently hot weather often causes the failure of batteries as well as cold snaps.

Theres only one thing you need to know about Rovers, and thats to leave well alone, but in saying that i did drive a brand new 3500 v8 (not mine ) back in, i think 1975 , not to bad.
