I jacked one wheel up today to do an oil change and ran the engine a bit to warm it up. but the raised wheel spins and the car is out of gear, I don't just mean it twists about a bit idely it really get packing to the point well you can stop it with your hand but need to take care. if I put my foot on the clutch it stops, but the point is its out of gear so why is it turning at all ?

I've seen the same thing happen on other vehicles but I cant answer why or how but it can happen
sure it happens on cars with limited slip diffs.
If you put your foot on the clutch and it stops, there's your answer. You could, for a load of money and no point, have the clutch plate tensioners adjusted, but you'll probably find most cars do this. Having the plates just about in contact makes for an effective clutch operation. If there was a significant gap, there would be a 'slip' of the clutch when the car was in gear.

limited slip diff in gearbox probably. are both wheels spinning or just one?
