Zulu and VCs

You know the film Zulu

which is kinda OK about the 1879 Battle of Isandlwana?

Does Sgt Jones VC appear in the film?

Who plays him?

and the scene he gets his VC for,is that in the film?

He is the one that organises the passing or evacuation of the wounded through the infirmary window whilst under attack

The Jones I am talking about is Sgt Jones, WIlliam I think who is buried in a paupers grave in Philllips Park Cemetery Manchester just across from the Velodrome and died 1913

I believe Sgt Jones does appear in the film.  At one point he is seen to pick up two large sacks(possibly grain) as his strength was legendary(most soldiers were struggling to carry one sack).

Not sure if his act of courage for the VC is actually in the film.  I think I'm also correct in saying he was played by the same chap who played Dave the Barman in Minder, though you have to look carefully as he has a large handlebar moustache in the film.

Yes, I also believe it is the man who is buried in Manchester.  He ended up in the workhouse having been forced to sell his VC at some point prior to entering the workhouse.

Dave the barman in "Minder" was played by Glynn Edwards. In the film "Zulu" he played the part of Corporal William Allen.

There is a William Jones in the film, but he has the rank of Private. The part was played by Richard Davies.

As it would not have been practical to portray every single participant of the Battle, some of the characters were amalgamated.

I believe Sgt. Jones may have been amalgamated with a few other people to become the character of Private Henry Hook, played by James Booth in the film, who was one of the two main characters in the infirmary scenes.

The film Zulu was not about the Battle of Isandlwana, that was Zulu Dawn, which was made in 1979 and starred Burt Lancaster.
The film Zulu (1964) depicted the battle at Rourkes Drift.
