I've just seen a few minutes of Ab Fab as the Rugby final is too depressing and I was amazed to hear Patsy refer to a male gay escorting the other one as a "fag bangle". Would that be allowed these days?

Probably not. They are all too serious and ready to be offended these days. Humour is not recognised - it's all very sad. :(
^^^^ I started on here because of embarrassment over the Rugby final, too.
i agree with jourdain - far too much PC
I've never heard of that before. Was that in one of the early series?
I doubt they'd use it on TV these days, maybe in a film.

Doesn't bother me much.
The term is recognised by Pink UK's gay dictionary
http://pinkuk.com/stayingin/slang.aspx?let=F
which is extremely informative ;-)
I really don't think being called a "Fag" is humorous at all. I have only ever heard the word used in a derogative manner. its hardly a PC issue, its bloody insulting and unpleasant.
If the community as a whole accepts it enough to put it in their website glossary I suspect it's all matured enough to be a case of how it's said. After all "fag hag" is used without apparent offence.
if its in the film then yes you can use that term but tv no i doubt it,
i saw a film on netflix a week ago when the " N"word "was used
If it wasn't allowed these days it wouldn't be broadcast on the tv
Of course it would....Ab Fab inhabits a particular 'world' and uses the language of that world.

As always, context is everything.

I am sure that any person who has grown up gay in the country has developed a thick enough skin to accept that the use of this term in a sitcom is used without malice, and purely for comic effect.

Gay people tend to save getting upset for the numerous far more vicious and cruel slights that society throws at them on a daily basis.
In this country even - far be it from me to segregate city-dwelling gay people out of the point!!
Can anybody tell me why two men or ladies together are called "GAY" - what's happy about it.
Well, I'm very happy.......does that help?
JJ, I'd imagine the couple are happy.
For jj, from wiki...

// Gay is a term that primarily refers to a homosexual person or the trait of being homosexual. The term was originally used to mean "carefree", "happy", or "bright and showy".

The term's use as a reference to homosexuality may date as early as the late 19th century, but its use gradually increased in the 20th century.[1] In modern English, gay has come to be used as an adjective, and as a noun, referring to the people, especially to gay males, and the practices and cultures associated with homosexuality. By the end of the 20th century, the word gay was recommended by major LGBT groups and style guides to describe people attracted to members of the same sex.[2][3] //
