Yesterday in a cafe I was engaged in conversation by two Russian students who were visiting Whitby for the day. They quizzed me about the ruins of Whitby Abbey and informed me that in Russia all their old buildings are in pristine condition. The subject moved on to fishing boats and I told them the fishing fleet was in decline. I was then informed that the fishing industry in Russia is thriving. I think you get the gist of the conversation by now. It continued for some time and I marvelled at how everything in Russia is perfect. They informed me that their parents were coming to visit and then boasted about how well travelled their parents were, and listed some of the countries they had visited. They asked me if my parents were as well travelled as theirs and I informed them that my parents were no longer with us. One of them made a tutting noise and then came out with the best line yet:
"Everyone in Russia has parents."

Sorry, I said the students were visiting Whitby for the day. I should of course have said they were visiting La-La Land (well, according to another A'Ber)
I like Whitby. I've only been there on two occasions but found it an interesting town.
I've only seen Whitby on the telly. It did look pretty.

jan, I was not born here but once I moved here I decided I didn't ever want to live anywhere else.
The town is interesting, and some of the characters more interesting still!
Бедная мать Россия! (Poor Mother Russia).

First Lenin, then Stalin, then Khrushchev, then Brezhnev, then Putin.

Now they face the prospect of a raving madwoman, armed only with yellow rubber gloves, a pair of kippers and a cattle prod.

Cut the poor guys some slack, haven't they endured enough?
Life expectancy in Russia is one of the lowest due to dangerous consumption of vodka.

They sound like fantasists to me.
Brainwashed so they are.
Whitby is a far better place to live. Russians, especially Putin fans , are brainwashed every bit as much as the North Koreans ! Whitby is lovely. Enough said.
I've been to Russia twice (non-tourist visits) and trust me, Russia ain't perfect... They do however look after their historical buildings/ mosques and many (were applicable) still have the gold on the roof's.
It was an interesting place, and had some very nice people, but not somewhere I would put on my wish list.
Have you ever had the Vodka with the Tequila worm in it? It makes you hallucinogenic and everything is either better or bigger or smaller. Did you know that Russian woman have 32a breasts and the men, twelve inch McWhoppers, or that the Trans-siberian is the shortest railway in the Motherland or that President Putin kisses bears.

If you didn't, you should.
Did you also know that the Russian for choc ice in kids' language is" говно на палочке" (*** on a stick)
i'vr been to either Whitby or Russia. where should I start?
Whilst говно passed the censor, its English translation did not (ess aitch one tee)
I'd love to go again but very unlikely...went on an inspection NATO/Warsaw Pact cross inspections teams in the early 90's, just got drafted into it. Saw Kursk and Kharkov Minsk Mazowieki in Poland and Maladzyechna in whats now Belarus....Didn't see a lot, weren't allowed to but other than a few orthodox churches was all a bit drab.... would love to do some sightseeing in places like Romania and The Old Czech republics, Carpathians that sort of place
Now that fact, BA, is really hitting the bowls of the Ruskies.
whitby or russia, never thought i'd hear that :-)
Bowls or bowels, DTC?

I knew someone who visited Russia when it was the USSR and things were really grim. There was a mustachioed old crone sitting on a chair in every corridor in the hotel. He idly wondered if his room was bugged and had a search around. He decided to check the TV for bugs and as he was tinkering with the back of it the phone rang. When he answered it a voice told him to leave the TV alone!

Blackadder - how very dare you! As if I would waste a perfectly good pair of kippers!
