I don't think they have any kind of relationship really, I think it's just that they have both been there before Bates, and feel threatened by him because he was the master's batman, and they know that their master trusts Bates!.......
Also...... Bates caught them and proved to Carson, that they stole some wine.
I think they are two of a kind, nasty spiteful types with a chip on their shoulders. Mr Bates has rather supplanted them i guess in the household, as he holds more sway with his Lordship, plus his relationship with Anna.
I am hooked on this series just like the first, and what's worse there is going to be a Christmas special where things go rather awry, perhaps leading to a third series, aghh
**SPOILER**

Next week either Matthew or William is going to die.

I bet shes his mum
Ooh,nice one Ric.ror. She could be.
Who is who's mum?? Confused!!
I think Ric.ror means that Mrs O'Brian might turn out to be Thomas' mum.
I would hope not, think it's just two peas out of the same pod, bad uns both
The bloke in the wheelchair gets his use of his legs back, and the newspaper mogul who wants to marry mary gets killed in a car crash.
Pure supposition I don't like unhappy endings
