Mid-'80s TV drama

Not much to go on, I'm afraid... but I recall a drama that featured a woman returning to a village / town after a long absence. Much oddness ensued, but the scene that sticks in my mind - near the beginning - is her walking up to an apparent stranger and asking "Are you the angel of death"? This then cuts to them having sex in a hotel.

Any clues?
