Can't remember the title of a movie, hope someone can help me.

I am wondering if anybody has seen a movie which involves a young american girl who has an affair with an(Asian) business man?

This girl is sent to an all girl boarding school somewhere in China or Japan...she sees this man on the ferry. It takes place in the 1930's or 40's I think. But I think the movie is fairly new...maybe filmed in 1970's to 1990's.

I think the title has "Affair" in it. I do know that it is not called "An Affair to Remember".

I see it on TV occassionally.

Anyway I have searched the web looking for this movie, but did not have any luck.

Sounds like "The Lover" (1992). They certainly meet on a ferry, as you can see in the trailer.
