I think the answer is Power Without Glory, set in Australia and the main character was John West, who was a bit of an entrepreneur (or gangster if you like) who steamrollered over everyone to promote his own businesses and family.

Used to be on a Wednesday night late. (I can remember that because I used to get home from Speedway at White City and watch it). It must have been back in the seventies.

Whenever I drive up the A12 from Ipswich I pass a place called Hasketon and it always makes me think of Hasky Tarbox. Was convinced it was the Aussie one.
