Not sure which section to put this in but lets see how it goes here.
For all who get plagued by these unwanted and often abusive calls and are unaware of this, BT has just launched a new initiaitve called 'BT call protec't - it's a free service and can be checked out at bt.com/help/callingfeatures -I got it yesterday and so far haven't had any spam call (although it's early days yet) - bit involved to explain on here but all is explained on line.
Hope this helps a few people.

Thank you rsvp! I'll have a look into this and hopefully reduce the nonsense phonecalls!
How much did it cost? I assume only BT customers can have it. From you post it looks as if it might be the same as their phone system BT Guardian which anyone can buy. If you get it free as a BT customeer then great. I bought the phone setup and have not ha a nuisance call since.

johnny37 it's a free service and only for BT customers.
I have one of these phones. I still get the odd spam call but very few. The reason for that is that I don't want to block withheld numbers as some of them are genuine.

Has it made a difference to the volume of calls jackdaw?
Free for 12 months for BT customers then £1.75 a month.
A great difference. I average about one spam call per week.
Question Author
keithg that's interesting because the gumpf I got said nothing about a contract and nothing about it being free for only the first year.

Thank you jackdaw33 - I hope I can report the same!
I have blocked all international and unavailable calls. It also has a facility for unrecognised and withheld numbers whereby the caller has to announce his name before the phone rings saying, 'You have a call from X'. You can then decide whether to accept the call, send it to answerphone or block it. It's a smashing bit of kit, although a bit tricky with the original set up. It's a BT8600. I paid £46 from Amazon but it might be £50+ now.
yes i have call protect as part of my talktalk package. it is free but not without its problems. BT8600 or BT Call Guardian whatever you want to call it is better. i had a nasty experience with one of these calls and my son bought me the BT8600.

J33 - I have the facility to block unavailable calls (I think!) but am a bit chary about actually blocking international calls as all my family live abroad - however, it is unlikely they would call me as we have skype and I'll tell them to sms my mobile with an approx time if they want to ring my land line. Here's fingers crossed for a less disturb life.
If you get an unwanted call which has a number displayed you press a button and asked if you wish to end the call and block the number. You gradually build up a bank of blocked numbers.
Question Author
So far haven't had to use the facility!
In that case rsvp you can set international calls to announce. This will tell you who the caller is.
Question Author
J33 - haven't checked out how to do that on the free system I have but may well look into it - thank you
