I felt so sorry for Ray who had been brought up by Barnardos, he should have received a letter from his birth mum 60 years ago and it was never passed to him. How dare these in authority play with people's lives? It was the same in the film Philomena when the nun lied about what she knew. Do you ever wonder where the dads are like I do? Ray's mum had had 13 children!

Its hard to judge now what was thought right then. It used to be thought right not to allow parents to visit children in hospital because if the parents didn’t visit, the children cried less. We now know that this is because they shut down and can become incredibly damaged.

I thought that part was sad that Ray never got the letter. It seems to be a common occurrence and feel so sorry for anyone who has missed out on contact with their family through negligence like this.
I don't think that "negligence" is the right word Sharon. I think there was a genuine belief that the child would be better/happier if the natural mother was unable to interfere with the upbringing.
It was very sad and like you pips I wondered about the 13 children apparently the all ended up in homes must have been awful. It would be great if they followed up this story as it did leave us all wondering!
I agree with Wolfgang. Times were different then.
