I need information and advice, please.
I have BT broadband and TV but am fed up with them.
What 'kit' if any would I need to change to Virgin or Sky?
I do not have a satellite disc nor is there cable installed to my house, I only have a phone line.
Would it be easy for me to switch?
Do you have any recommendations?
I will want internet, TV and telephone.
Thanks.

If there is no Virgin cable in your area you can't switch to Virgin. Check here:

If you are in a Virgin area they will connect the cable to your house, which is pain free, and supply you with a router for your broadband and a Tivo for your tv. I'm happy with them. I get 150 Mbps broadband speed but that is their fastest package and most expensive. There are cheaper options. I like my Tivo box, I can record three channels at a time

I have never used Sky so can't advise about that.

Thank you HC4361.
I'll check that website .
For Sky TV just a dish and whichever box you choose. If its not a Virgin area whatever sky are offering - they do have some pretty hot deals at present.
It's supposed to be easier to switch now. If Sky, they should handle the switch and send you the Sky box to plug in yourself.
I'm more than happy with Virgin. Their customer service is superb, and I love the Tivo box .

I have checked and I could get Virgin.

Would Sky fit the dish for me ?
Yes sky will fit the dish.
No, you'll have to scale the roof yourself.....;) x x

Would I need planning permission for the dish?
I'm in a so-called Conservation Area and we seem to need someone's permission to do anything......
My one problem with Sky tv is loss of signal in bad weather. Virgin cable does not have this problem.

That would be a job for lordalex, Bathsheba.....in his kilt of course....

If you're in a conservation area getting Sky is more difficult. Check with whoever you need to first.
This is the best Sky deal I think if you can get round the dish issue

Thanks everyone.
I think I will be looking at Virgin.....hope to goodness I won't need permission to have a cable put in. That would send us over the edge as regards blinking councils interfering with us.....we even need permission to cut back our trees.
Bah!
No permissions needed for Virgin

Thank you, HC4361.
That is reassuring.
Out of interest Ladyalex, what has made you fed up with the BT service?
My question exactly Maydup !

If BT has upgraded your area to receive its Infinity packages, then you be better staying with them. I changed over to Infinity One and now get about 37 mega pixies, which is marvelous.

I have made the following point many times before but if you can't get a direct link with a fibre-optic cable, as Virgin will give you, you are still going to have your internet service via your telephone line, which only BT can provide.

What is wrong with the service you get from BT now ? If BT hasn't upgraded its green cabinets, you won't be able to get high speeds, no matter who you go with, through your telephone line.
